Our Story

Why this story matters

Urban Frames did not begin as a product idea. It began as a way to hold on to one exact place with enough precision and emotion to make it unforgettable.

Urban Frames is a Bucharest-based studio creating handcrafted 3D city relief maps and personalized urban wall art from real geographic data. The idea started with founder Aurelian — a landscape architecture and urbanism graduate of Universitatea de Arhitectură și Urbanism "Ion Mincu" (UAUIM) in Bucharest — after close friends got engaged and he spent weeks looking for a gift that felt as unique as the proposal itself. Nothing he found felt intimate enough. So instead of buying something about the moment, he chose to preserve the place where it happened. Using LiDAR data, topography, and reference imagery, he created a custom Oslo relief centered on the port area, with a discreet marker on the exact spot where their new adventure began.

That first frame came out of a long-standing passion for cities: walking until you lose your sense of direction in old street networks, learning how neighborhoods carry the past, and following urban exploration stories that keep forgotten places alive even after they close to the public. Urban Frames grew from that same curiosity. Each piece turns streets, parks, waterfronts, and landmarks into tactile city wall art that feels personal, believable, and lasting. The goal is not generic decor, but a physical memory of a place that changed something in your life.

From that first Oslo proposal piece, the studio kept building small tokens for adventures, milestones, and people, alongside larger collector frames that bring someone back to a city they explored, lived in, or still miss. Urban Frames remains a small family studio in Bucharest, shaped by Aurelian, his wife, and the young daughter growing up around the rhythm of the workshop. Every frame is still made with the same care as the original gift: precise, intimate, and full of meaning.

Our Mission

At Urban Frames, our mission is simple: help you preserve meaningful connections to the exact places that shaped your life. Whether it is your hometown, the port where you proposed, the city where you studied abroad, or the neighborhood where your family story started, we turn those locations into handcrafted 3D city reliefs made to be kept for years.

We ship throughout Europe from our Bucharest workshop. Because every piece is made to order and printed to fit its frame, delivery is typically completed within 10 business days while we maintain consistent quality.

Sustainability matters to us. We use PLA—a biodegradable material derived from renewable resources—and produce only what is ordered, minimizing waste. Each frame is crafted with the same thoughtfulness that went into that first Oslo proposal gift.

Our Process

Every Urban Frames city relief follows a meticulous four-stage process that combines digital mapping with hands-on craftsmanship. Production starts with LiDAR, topographical layers, map data, and reference imagery so that every street, building footprint, waterfront edge, and elevation change is grounded in the real city. That raw information is transformed into a printable 3D model, refined for clarity and scale without losing geographic truth. The relief is then printed layer by layer on FDM 3D printers using premium PLA filament and finished by hand before final inspection, framing, and shipping. Because each insert is produced for a specific frame size and location, the full workflow from data to delivery is typically completed within 10 business days.

1

Data Collection

We gather LiDAR, topographical, and map reference data from trusted geographical sources so every relief starts from accurate urban information.

2

3D Modeling

Our designers transform raw data into optimized 3D models, enhancing features and ensuring printability while maintaining geographical accuracy.

3

Precision Printing

Using state-of-the-art FDM 3D printers, we carefully print each relief layer by layer with premium materials like PLA, PETG, and specialty filaments.

4

Finishing & Quality Control

Each piece is carefully finished, inspected for quality, and mounted in a custom frame before being packaged and shipped to you.

Our Team

Urban Frames is intentionally small: a family studio in Bucharest built around design, 3D printing, cartography, and hand-finishing. We care about making work that feels personal enough to deserve the memory behind it.

From choosing the right city coverage to refining contours, testing print quality, and packaging each finished piece, every decision is guided by the same passion that shaped the first frame: creating something unique, intimate, and genuinely meaningful for the person receiving it.

Founder

Aurelian — Founder, Urban Frames

Aurelian is the founder of Urban Frames. He studied landscape architecture and urbanism at Universitatea de Arhitectură și Urbanism "Ion Mincu" (UAUIM) in Bucharest — Romania's leading architecture school — where he developed a deep understanding of how cities are shaped by topography, infrastructure, and human memory. He is drawn to cities as living archives: old ports, side streets, layered histories, and places that still carry the weight of the past. After close friends got engaged, he spent a long time searching for a gift that felt as singular as their proposal, but nothing on the market felt personal enough. So he built one himself: a custom Oslo relief made from LiDAR data, topography, and reference imagery, with a marker on the exact place where the proposal happened. That piece became the foundation of Urban Frames. Today, Aurelian leads the full process at the studio—from selecting source data and shaping each 3D model to materials, print quality, and final hand-finishing—creating personalized city relief maps and collector pieces for people who want to keep a meaningful place close.

What We Stand For

Geographic Precision

Every relief starts from real LiDAR, topographic, and cartographic data — not stylized illustrations. Streets, building footprints, and elevation changes reflect the actual city.

Made to Order in Bucharest

We print only what is ordered, using biodegradable PLA sourced from renewable feedstock. No overstock, no warehouse — each piece ships within 10 business days from our studio.

One Piece, One Story

Every frame is assembled and inspected by hand before it leaves the studio. If the print is not right, we reprint. Your exact location, your exact memory.
